Kuba Cloth

Kuba cloth is unmistakably one of the most elegant fabrics in the world. A raffia fabric, made by the Kuba people of Democratic Republic of Congo, Kuba cloth has been collected and admired by foreigners since the 1600s. This beautiful fabric has inspired ordinary and famous alike, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Paul Klee.

Kuba cloth's appeal is in the rhythm of the design. Abstract, geometric patterns in a limited color palette meander and merge in a soft, fluid, undulating manner. Motifs change; one flows seamlessly into another, and whether by mistake or intent of the designer, nothing seems out of place. Kuba cloth plays with your optical senses. The expected and unexpected appear: motifs recede and proceed, appear and disappear, and wander across the cloth. The basic color palette is narrow (mostly earth tones), but the Kuba are masters at using these colors to produce exciting tone-on-tone textiles with flashes of color. Kuba cloth is never boring.
